‘Twas The Night Before Jesus Came!

‘Twas The Night Before Jesus Came! by the Reverend Tanner Cline Bartow Florida Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church ARPTalk Chuck Wilson

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Christmas poem below, written by the Reverend Tanner Cline, was presented on Christmas Eve to the congregation of the Bartow Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bartow, Florida. I admire people with poetic creativity. I was blessed and intrigued by the poem. As you read it, I pray you find a belated Christmas blessing.

‘Twas the night before Jesus came, when all thro’ the earth,
Most people had given up on the Messiah’s birth.

Caesar was taxing the world without care,
Joseph counted coins to pay his fair share.

Citizens rode donkeys to their destination.
Toes tapped waiting in line for their registration.

The angel’s announcement swirled in Mary’s head,
Her Son would save the world like Gabriel said!

Thousands filled the streets of King David’s city,
Poor, pregnant Mary received little pity.

Joseph paced the town looking for a room.
The mood suddenly turned all doom and gloom.

Mary needed somewhere to lay her head.
But Joseph couldn’t find his wife a bed.

When Hotel signs read, “No vacancy.”
A Manger emerged with relevancy.

Knowing the night was fading with time,
Joseph inquired one final time.

Sir, do you have a bedroom?
I’m sorry, but I have no more room.

With eyebrows quickly ascending and as
his cheeks formed a slight grin,

The innkeeper exclaimed, “Wait! I have a stable
you can stay in!”

Christmas carols paint a picture in a poetic way,
How the Son of God spent His first night asleep on the hay.

After wrapping Jesus in a swaddling cloth,
Mary placed her newborn in a feeding trough.

Nearby shepherds worked hard tending their sheep.
Just settling down for a good night’s sleep.

When suddenly an angel appeared in the sky,
And the glory of the Lord came down from on high.

The angel explained there is no reason to fear.
The angel shared news the shepherds must hear.

There is no reason for you to be afraid.
Tonight, God made a way for you to be saved.

Look for the sign God has given to you.
A manger and swaddling clothes are the two.

An angelic choir filled the air,
The shepherds nodded, “We must go there!”

Baby Jesus was discovered by them,
The shepherds rejoiced when they saw him!

Jesus came to a world damaged by sin.
This is why the Son of God entered in.

Only Jesus could pay the full cost,
For what Adam’s sin had truly lost.

On the cross, Jesus bled and died,
so sinners could be justified.

The Bible preserves prophecies foretold.
In Jesus Christ, we see them all unfold.

Jesus is the only way.
Obey His voice and trust Him today.

He promised to return for His own.
He’s coming back to reign on His Throne.

When Jesus returns, will you be prepared?
Are you excited or are you scared?
